Kate Middleton and Prince William Visited First Responders Working the Coronavirus Pandemic

On March 19, Kate Middleton and Prince William paid a visit to the London Ambulance Service to thank the first responders for their work during the coronavirus pandemic.

As its name suggests, the London Ambulance Service is the part of the U.K. National Health Service that handles responding to medical emergencies.

“It’s at times like this when we realize just how much the NHS represents the very best of our country and society—people from all backgrounds and walks of life with different experiences and skills, pulling together for the common good,” Prince William said, according to royal correspondent Richard Palmer, who shared a thread of videos from the outing on Twitter. “Not only are NHS staff and emergency workers responding to the needs of the public, they—like the rest of us—are concerned about their families, friends, and loved ones. They need our support as much as we need theirs.”

Kate Middleton and Prince William also met with other staffers, who have reportedly been fielding five times as many calls as usual from the public, and sent regards from Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles.

“That is why Catherine and I were proud to visit staff working at NHS 111, to pass on our personal thanks, along with those of my grandmother and father, to staff working around the clock to provide care and advice to those that need it most,” he reportedly told them. “All of us have a part to play if we’re going to protect the most vulnerable. That means acting on the latest expert advice, staying home if we or those we live with have symptoms, and avoiding nonessential contact to help reduce the spread of the virus.”

Meanwhile, also on March 19, Prince Harry announced that the Invictus Games, the competition event for wounded, injured, or sick armed-services personnel and veterans (which he founded in 2014), has been postponed until next year. “I know how disappointed you must all be. This is a focus that so many of you need,” he said in a video message on Twitter. “I would encourage you to maintain that focus as best you can. The good thing is you have an extra 12 or so months to be even fitter, to get even fitter than you already are, to be at your absolute top mental and physical fitness, so, in that sense, I’m really excited about the games next year. I’m sorry that we couldn’t provide this for you. Please look after yourselves. Please look after your families. Please look out for one another…do what you do best, which is reaching out to other people.”
