Kate Middleton and Prince William Would Like to Thank You for Your Birthday Wishes to Prince George

Prince George turns eight today, and proud parents Duchess Kate and Prince William are grateful to everyone celebrating along with him.

On Twitter this morning, the royal couple expressed their gratitude to fans who've shared their well wishes and greetings for their eldest child. "Thank you for all your lovely messages on Prince George's eighth birthday!" the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tweeted on their official account.

Though it's unclear how exactly the young prince will be spending his big day, the duke and duchess kicked off the festivities last night as they do every year for all their kids: by sharing a new portrait.

This year's photo features a smiling George wearing a striped polo and shorts while sitting atop a car in a grassy field. The snapshot was captured in Norfolk by the duchess herself, a photography aficionado who takes all her children's official birthday pictures. The Cambridges shared the sweet image on social media too (with proper emoji usage).

While George and his siblings—Princess Charlotte, 6, and Prince Louis, 3—have remained relatively out of the spotlight in the past pandemic-stricken year, the oldest Cambridge child returned to the public eye weeks ago when he joined his parents at the Euro 2020 championship in Wembley Stadium.

He was spotted in the stands, flanked between the duke and duchess, during England's matches against Germany and Italy. The young soccer ("football") fan watched intently and cheered along—all while in a little navy suit and striped tie.
