Prince William  and Kate Middleton have announced that their dog, Lupo, passed away earlier this November.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge shared the sad news via Instagram on Sunday, November 22. “Very sadly last weekend our dear dog, Lupo, passed away,” they captioned a gorgeous shot of the family dog. “He has been at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much. - W & C.”

Lupo, a nine-year-old black English cocker spaniel, was given to the royal couple by the duchess’s parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, on Christmas in 2011, according to Entertainment Tonight, a year before they announced they were expecting their first child together.

The beloved dog had a big role in the Cambridges’ lives over the last decade. In fact, Lupo has appeared in many of the royal family’s portraits, including one taken right after Prince William and Middleton welcomed their son and another from a photoshoot in honor of Prince George’s third birthday.

There were even rumors that Lupo was responsible for choosing the future king’s name. According to The Mirror, Prince William and Kate Middleton wrote down dozens of names on pieces of paper and placed them around the house. The pooch chose “George.”

The duchess's brother, James Middleton, also shared a touching tribute via his own account on November 22. “It is with great sadness that Lupo, the beloved dog of my sister Catherine and her family has passed away,” he shared.

“Nothing can ever prepare you for the loss of a dog,” he continued. “For those who have never had a dog, it might be hard to understand the loss. However for those who have loved a dog know the truth: a dog is not just a pet; it is a member of the family, a best friend, a loyal companion, a teacher and a therapist.”

“Rest in peace Lupo,” James ended his post. “You will always be remembered and your legacy will live on forever. Good Boy.”
