Kate Middleton is constantly compared to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, a woman she was sadly never able to meet. Royals fans particularly love comparing their fashion choices, which may annoy Middleton but it’s done out of love.
Princess Diana was considered one of the most fashionable women of her generation, and much as with Middleton (and her sister-in-law, Meghan Markle), the world loved seeing what gowns, dresses, and yes, jewels she’d choose for engagements. When she died in 1997, Prince William and Prince Harry inherited her collection, and since then Middleton and Markle have often worn various pieces. Remember that amazing aquamarine ring Markle wore with her evening wedding reception dress back in 2018? That was previously Princess Diana’s.
Now eagle-eyed royals fans think Middleton may have adapted a famous pair of Di’s earrings into a gorgeous necklace. During an appearance this week at Buckingham Palace with Prince William, Duchess Catherine wore what appears to be one of the sapphire drop earrings given to Princess Diana as a wedding gift from Crown Prince Fahd of Saudi Arabia (per Hello!) around her neck.
“A closer look at Kate’s new sapphire and diamond pendant necklace. @allthingsroyal suggests the stones may originate from Princess Diana’s Saudi sapphire suite. It seems the drop earrings from the parure were used to create the pendant,” the Twitter account Kate’s closet (@katesclosetau) posted. Take a look for yourself in the photo below:
Kensington Palace has not commented on the jewelry, and we don’t really expect them to, but if Kate Middleton did adapt the earrings into a new piece, it was a great idea. What a creative, fresh way to wear the jewels, am I right? Then again, you could do pretty much anything with those sparkling sapphires and they’d look incredibly gorgeous and chic. We have to stan.
