Saturday Night Live took a moment to honor the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in its season 46 premiere. Kate McKinnon, who portrayed RBG on the show, dressed as her and bowed her head with a hand on her chest before looking up to pay honor to the late justice. RBG died on September 18 at the age of 87 due to complications of metastatic cancer.
“For so many of us, Justice Ginsburg was a real-life superhero: a beacon of hope, a warrior for justice, a robed crusader who saved the day time and again,” Kate said in a previous statement to People. “Playing her on SNL was a profound joy because I could always feel the overwhelming love and gratitude that the audience had for her. It was one of the great honors of my life to meet Justice Ginsburg, to shake her hand, and to thank her for her lifetime of service to this country.”
The court’s statement said RBG died in her home in Washington surrounded by family. “Our nation has lost a justice of historic stature,” Chief Justice John Roberts said. “We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her, a tired and resolute champion of justice.”
When she was alive, RBG expressed that she enjoyed her portrayal on SNL, calling Kate “marvelously funny.” She said, “I liked the actress who portrayed me.”
