Kate Bosworth Wore a Fanny Pack on the Red Carpet

The funny thing about Target’s latest designer collaboration is that it isn’t with a designer at all, but with fashion news website Who What Wear. Additionally, this line isn’t simply a one-off, but an ongoing monthly capsule collection with no confirmed end date in sight. Frankly, considering just how many designer collaborations there have been lately (Alexander Wang and Balmain for H&M, Lily Pulitzer and Altuzarra for Target, so forth) this approach is one that appears to be, well, refreshing. “Our approach was totally different from what an ‘actual designer’ might have done,” explained WWW co-founder Hillary Kerr. “It’s a little bit art and a little bit science. We have a huge amount of data from our site about what women want to wear. And also from looking at so much street style, you start to notice key pieces that come up again and again. So we figured out what some of those more directional pieces might be and how to translate them to Target’s audience.”
Jaime King was wearing a “very high-end” feathered skirt (from a designer she couldn’t recall) and tucked in one of the Target peplum tanks. “You can tuck in the tee like I have here,” said King, “Or you can wear it untucked with jeans. I grew up in Omaha, Nebraska where I didn’t have access to anything fashion. But with this line, even if you can only buy one piece, you can wear it so many different ways, and that’s what makes it Who What Wear.”
The actress, who is formerly a model — “I moved to New York when I was 14 and was so blessed to work with true masters, people like Lee McQueen. My first show was for Gucci and I was between Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell. I literally thought I was going to die.” — is clearly not afraid to take risks on the red carpet. “I am mostly self-styled. Sometimes I work with stylists, but I am so close with designers that I know I will choose the looks other actors will never wear because they’re afraid to get on some “Worst Dressed” list. But ironically, those are always the best pieces!”

“Society has created this issue with the Fashion Police’s of the world,” she continued. “All the negativity. I’ve been asked to be on that show probably thirty times, but there is no way I could go on that show and judge someone in that way. Nobody walks out the door intending to not feel beautiful.”
For Kate Bosworth “feeling beautiful” meant going where very few red-carpet walkers have gone before: she wore a fannypack. “I mean, I haven’t worn a fannypack since the late eighties,” she joked. “But I thought Who What Wear did a great job of keeping it minimal and chic. I’m a sucker for anything minimalist. And it’s actually quite roomy compared to most clutches - you can hardly fit an iPhone in a clutch anymore.”
Jessica Alba was also on hand with a fashion risk of her own - mixing a bold patterned skirt with a striped tank top. “I love pairing stripes with a pattern. Just play and have fun. I think maybe because there’s black and white in the pattern, it’s ok to add a black and white stripe. You have to find the pattern’s colors in the stripe you’re wearing.” She was also trying out the metallic pumps trend last night. Said the actress: “The cool thing with metallic pumps is that they surprisingly can go with anything. The secret is really to just go for it.”
So whether it’s a peplum tank, a floral skirt or a leather moto jacket, the theme of this Target collab appears to be: just go for it. And that’s something we can get behind.
