During the many Allure Facebook Lives — including our Lipstick Roulette series— I've had the chance to co-host, I've learned there's truly an art to swatching. Simply swiping a liquid lipstick onto your hand or forearm doesn't cut it. Instead, it's all about perfectly little rectangles that look like they were stenciled on. I take my time creating them, and, at this stage in the game, pride myself in my swatching skills. A makeup artist known as stellasabina_artistry on Instagram has totally ruined my confidence, though. Her latest Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick swatch is basically a Louvre-level work of art. She brushed several bold shades like Backstage Bambi (a hot pink), Ayesha (a lavender), A-Go-Go (a bright orange), and Echo (a navy blue) onto her forearm to create gorgeous roses — complete with shading and blending that would make Georgia O'Keefe jealous. When Stella's Instagram post of the masterpiece came up on my Instagram feed, I caught myself staring at the intricate Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick swatch for a good five minutes.
In the caption, Stella wrote that she was trying to use most of the KVD liquid lipsticks she owned. If you were to pose that challenge to me, I would just create some kind of basic rainbow or elementary school-style daisies. The London-based aspiring MUA is currently in beauty school, so the floral swatches were basically her version of studying.
Stella isn't the only one creating over-the-top swatches. Among many others experimenting with shapes beyond swipes is Joy, known as aljureallure on Instagram. She considers herself a swatch artist. Based on these examples alone, you'll get it.
Now excuse me while I attempt to up my swatching skills.
