Kanye West's Yeezy Season 9 Show Is Coming to Paris Fashion Week [Updated]

After making a surprise runway appearance at Balenciaga's "The Mud Show" just the day before, Kanye West, now known as "Ye," suddenly announced he has something in the works for his fashion label Yeezy.

In a Business of Fashion report on Sunday, the "Donda" rapper confirmed that he will, in fact, be debuting a new collection for his Yeezy brand during Paris Fashion Week on Monday afternoon. The upcoming show marks the first since his Season 8 presentation back in Fall 2020, which was also held in Paris.

Ye's Season 9 showcase will reportedly host only as few as 50 attendees at an intimate venue in Paris's 8th arrondissement. The musician is also expected to partner with designers like Hood by Air’s Shayne Oliver for the latest collection.

In a slew of Instagram posts, Ye uploaded a sneak peek into the show, including that of a model casting mood board featuring throwback childhood photos of stars like Bella Hadid, Rihanna, Naomi Campbell – and even his soon-to-be ex-wife Kim Kardashian. He also teased the "SZN9" collection with a post of what appears to be a model dressed in a full-body printed catsuit that covers her face. "SZN9," he writes.

Ye's Season 9 collection could face some branding issues, which could limit the use of the Yeezy name, as he's currently facing an ongoing dispute with Adidas. The rapper claims the sportswear company was releasing products without his involvement or sign-off. He abruptly ended his two-year partnership with Gap in September due to the retail chain not fulfilling its promise to release more apparel and to open further retail stores.

UPDATE, Monday Oct. 3, 3:30 p.m. ET: Over an hour after its scheduled start time, the show began with a short video compilation that was projected on the wall, including clips from John Lennon and Steve Jobs, a throwback interview with Kim Kardashian and a closing tidbit from Ye speaking of his late mother, Donda West, during a 2019 David Letterman interview. The audience included designers like Riccardo Tisci and Demna, as well as Anna Wintour, Hamish Bowles and other prominent industry figures.

After more waiting, West gave opening remarks, addressing the event's delay by reminding the audience of the Yeezy Season 4 show in New York (who could forget?), when he stranded showgoers on Roosevelt Island for five hours, and how all the coverage focused on the late start. Essentially, he was asking the press not to do that again. He then went on to rant about a number of topics, like Kardashian's 2016 Paris robbery, his former manager Scooter Braun, the struggles of breaking into the fashion industry, his recent fallout with Gap and more.

Next, Donda Academy children — and North West — took the stage for a choir performance that resembled a Yeezy-sponsored cult. After a couple of songs, models finally emerged donning the new Yeezy pieces. The collection includes oversized puffer coats, form-fitting jumpsuits and leggings, knee-high boots, boxy tees – everything well-embedded in the brand's DNA. Naomi Campbell, Amelia Gray Hamlin, Michèle Lamy and James Blake were among the cast.

One piece in particular made a statement – and we don't mean that in a good way. There were variations of a "White Lives Matter" graphic tee design, the phrase emblazoned on the back with an image of Pope John Paul II on the front — one worn on the runway and others by Ye and right-wing commentator Candace Owens, also in attendance. In the past, Ye has expressed controversial opinions about race (to put it mildly) and supported conservative politicians like former president Donald Trump.

Ye has once again made people wait around for, dare we say, an underwhelming collection, and it begs the question: Is the musician truly a multifaceted talent deserving of the industry's respect, or is he just great at stirring controversy?

Those who saw the show, whether in-person or via the now-private live stream, were quick to share their thoughts on social media, seemingly not impressed by his newest alt-right-presenting design, to say the least.
