Yesterday in Santa Monica, the day before Kanye West’s and Kim Kardashian’s five year wedding anniversary, the couple stepped out for a celebratory date-night dinner at Giorgio Baldi restaurant. KKW was dressed for the occasion in a body-hugging silk black dress and a pair of heels with a gladiator-style strap, wrapping around the calves almost up to the knee. Kanye kept his look pared back and wore black sneakers, black pants, a white t-shirt, along with an all-American workwear classic: the Carhartt “Detroit Jacket” in brown, with a corduroy collar trim. Currently, the piece of outerwear, which is described on the Carhartt site as “built on a reputation on toughness,” goes for the very reasonable price of $75.
This isn’t Kanye’s first foray into workwear for special nights out. Just this past month, the rapper caused a commotion on the Met Gala red carpet when he donned a black Dickies “Eisenhower” jacket that retailed at $43, while Kim wore a custom Thierry Mugler silicon dress complete with a Mr. Pearl-designed corset. Kardashian told Vogue that West chose the understated look, in lieu of the something more outrageous, so “he could fade into the background” and let the spotlight be on her.
Whatever the reason behind Kanye’s continued love for workwear—we assume he just likes it!—it's a refreshing departure from his oft-worn long, loose, and layered silhouettes courtesy of his own brand, Yeezy. There’s no denying that West looks good in the structured, sturdy jackets that are made to last. Of course, the accessible price is a bonus, too.
