Kamala Harris Just Announced She's Running for President in 2020

Senator Kamala Harris-a California Democrat-has officially announced her campaign for presidency in the 2020 election. Harris made the announcement via a now-trending video on Twitter this morning while simultaneously appearing on Good Morning America.

"Justice. Decency. Equality. Freedom. Democracy. These aren't just words. They're the values we as Americans cherish. And they're all on the line now," Harris says in the video. "The future of our country depends on you and millions of others lifting our voices to fight for our American values...That's why I'm running for president of the United States. I'm running to lift those voices, to bring our voices together."

Harris is the first African-American woman to announce a run for the presidency in 2020, CNN reports. A former prosecutor, Harris gained nationwide traction when she stood fervently against President Trump's nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court amidst multiple allegations of sexual assault. (She even stumped the now-Justice with a question about abortion during his confirmation hearing.)

As for the crux of Harris' campaign-which will have headquarters in Baltimore and Oakland-the Senator aims to satisfy the needs of the long-neglected middle class. She's dubbed Trump's infamous border wall and subsequent government shutdown a "vanity project" that fails to serve the people.

Harris' campaign theme will be "Kamala Harris for the people"-words she first uttered as a prosecutor, and continued to repeat to herself each time she rose in court. In her memoir The Truths We Hold, she cites the "nerves, excitement, and adrenaline" that overcame her the first time she spoke this phrase, which now serves as the driving force of her campaign for presidency.
