The flow of water is now carrying anti-personnel and water mines, as well as lighter ammunition, into the Black Sea and along its coastline, she said.

"The left (east) bank, which is geographically lower, was severely flooded and disturbed by the (rising waters),” Humeniuk said.

“Before that, Russian occupying forces had built several defensive lines there...including minefields consisting of multiple rows of mines... Their field ammunition depots were also located within the flooded strip of 5 to 15 kilometers ... All this has now been scattered across the flooded zone and accordingly may pose a danger to the coastline where it washes up."

Humeniuk warned that explosive items could be hidden within the garbage piles carried into the sea by the flow of flood water from the Dnipro.

"We have to realize that these garbage heaps may contain other explosive objects," she said.

“Nobody should approach these garbage piles, even when they are clearly washed up ashore. Specialists need to be called in to examine them.”

A mine was discovered on the beach at Kurontne, on the southern coast of Odesa Oblast, on June 11, five days after the Kakhovka dam was destroyed by an explosion.

Kurontne is about 120 kilometers from the mouth of the Dniprovska Gulf — the joint mouth of the Dnipro and Pivdeniy Buh rivers, which empty into the Black Sea
