Kaia Gerber’s New Look Is Straight Out of a ’90s Romcom

When you think of power dressing, there’s usually only one decade that springs to mind. Be it Joan Collins in power shoulders as she swans around a gilded mansion in Dynasty, or models striking poses on a Paris runway wearing oversize Thierry Mugler tailoring, there are few decades that have redefined the working woman’s wardrobe as radically—and as fabulously—as the ’80s.

But spare a thought for the ’90s, too. Whether it’s the relaxed officewear worn by Calista Flockhart in Ally McBeal, or the even more casual working girl looks Meg Ryan sported in her era-defining romcoms, the decade also offers plenty of subtler takes on the spirit of power dressing—and now, it seems the period’s defining style moments have found a new fan in Kaia Gerber. After revealing her new haircut earlier this month, courtesy of fashion’s favorite hairstylist Guido Palau, Gerber has been matching her ’90s-inspired bob with pieces that hark back to both the sleek, chic shapes of the decade and its unique take on corporate style.

Today, stepping out during Milan Fashion Week between her hectic schedule of shows, Gerber went for a look that was ’90s from head to toe. Black wraparound sunglasses? Check. Oversize blazer? Check. Strappy heels, shoulder bag, crop top? Check, check, check. Of course, it’s easy to read her outfit as an ode to her mother, Cindy Crawford, whose off-duty style played no small part in defining the style codes of the decade to which Gerber is now paying tribute. But with this latest look—and its easy, breezy assurance—let it be clear that Gerber’s fresh, laid-back spin on the ’90s executive realness trend is very much her own.
