‘Justice League’ Powers To $13M Thursday Night; Beats ‘Wonder Woman’ – Friday AM Update

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros./DC’s Justice League made $13M last night per Warner Bros., which is where some of our more aggressive box office analysts saw it. Previews began at 6PM. Last night’s take is higher than the $11M minted by Wonder Woman before earning a $38.2M Friday ($103.3M opening). Based on these estimates, the notion is that Justice League could fly to a $110M-$115M start and a possible $37M-$40M Friday. Already as of Wednesday, Justice League has already collected $8.5M in nine countries, spurred by Brazil, Korea and France. There are 38 more countries opening today.

Recently, Disney/Marvel’s Thor Ragnarok grossed $14.5M off its Thursday night, which repped a little more than a third of its $46.47M Friday before posting a $122.7M three-day. However, critics embraced the Taika Waititi film, giving is one of Marvel’s best reviews ever at 92% certified fresh. Similar to such DC movies as Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (27% Rotten) and Suicide Squad (26% Rotten), critics haven’t been kind to Snyder’s super friends entourage pic, smacking the title with a current 38% Rotten. Wonder Woman’s Thursday night repped about 29% of its Friday, while BvS made $27.7M on its Holy Thursday, which contributed to 34% to its $81.55M Good Friday (opening weekend was $166M).

Justice League‘s Thursday night beats that of Deadpool ($12.7M), Guardians of the Galaxy ($11.2M), and is just $500K shy of what It made for New Line/Warner Bros. on its preview night.

Lionsgate’s feature adaptation of the bestselling YA novel Wonder also previewed last night and earned $740k from 2,400 locations that had showtimes starting at 7PM. That movie came was tracking at $9M, moved to $14M and there’s a very good chance it could well outperform. There’s also Sony Affirm’s animated Biblical film The Star which opened at 5PM tonight. That pic is pegged at making $10M.

In estimates this morning, Ragnarok led all films in regular release yesterday with $2.4M for a second week’s take of $70.6M and a two week running cume of $225.6M. This weekend, Ragnarok, will easily eclipse the domestic lifetime cume of last year’s Doctor Strange from Marvel which ended its run at $232.6M. Ragnarok is projected to rake in north of $30M+ this weekend despite Justice League‘s presence in the marketplace.

20th Century Fox’s Murder on the Orient Express drove an estimated $37.9M in its first week with a second place take yesterday of $1.79M. The Kenneth Branagh-directed title is igniting its older female fanbase and is expected to ease 40% in weekend two for $17.1M. Ten-day total by Sunday should be around $55M. Paramount’s Daddy’s Home 2 made $1.16M yesterday for a week’s estimated tally of $35.8M. The PG-13 family comedy is looking at a 45% dip for $16.3M in weekend 2 for a running 10 day total of $52M.

We’ll have more updates for you later.
