  • AG Merrick Garland recently appointed Smith to oversee criminal investigations involving Trump.

Special counsel Jack Smith subpoenaed election officials in Arizona, Michigan, and Wisconsin for communications with former President Donald Trump, his presidential campaign, and allies, the Washington Post reported.

These are the first known subpoenas sent out by Smith, who was appointed last month by Attorney General Merrick Garland to oversee criminal investigations involving Trump. They include the DOJ's sprawling investigation into the January 6 Capitol attack and an inquiry into the former president's handling of sensitive government documents at Mar-a-Lago.

According to the Post, the subpoenas were sent to officials in Dane County, Wisconsin; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Maricopa County, Arizona; and Wayne County, Michigan. Trump lost to Joe Biden in all three states, and they were at the heart of his failed effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
