‘Just the Two of Us’ writer William Salter talks about his newfound TikTok fame

After the song was trending on TikTok, one of the most viral videos to use it is by Jada Salter, the 24-year-old granddaughter of Harlem native William “Salty Bill” Salter — who just so happens to be the man who wrote the song.

- All these people all day. You went completely viral. Do you know that means? You ain't dead yet.

WILLIAM SALTER: Just the two of us. It's a phrase that's been around since time immemorial, so it's nothing new really, but it's familiar.

I started writing back in the mid 60s Just the Two of Us was actually written, and I think it was in the early 80s, I believe.

JADA SALTER: I was about seven or eight years old. I go upstairs to his office, and I hear him playing the Will Smith version of his song. And so he explained like, Oh this is the song I did. And then he recreated it. And it was so cool because there was a storybook to it.

I went back to camp the next weekday and I was showing everybody on my Walkman. I was like, Yeah this is my grandpa's song and I just thought that he was the coolest person ever.

WILLIAM SALTER: Just the Two of Us is a personal thing that anybody could take and make it their own, basically.

JADA SALTER: Just the Two of Us the song is trending on TikTok. Not much people know who wrote these songs, and who is behind them. Since he's in my family, he's my grandfather, I have the perfect way to show people, OK, this is this is who wrote the song.

So I just made the video, and I didn't expect it to go as big as it did. It just flew off. I'm just really happy for that because it is helping him get the recognition he deserves, and also other people that are behind the scenes more recognition.

I have the song, and then I'm showing pictures of me and my grandfather, or just my grandfather himself. I have pictures of him when he was younger. And I would pop up in the videos like, that's him right there. That's him right there. My video got, I think, over a million views, and then I decided, OK, why don't I help him get a TikTok?

So, he got a TikTok and I helped him through it. He watched the video, and react to it. And so when he did that, it just went crazy. He has over 10 million views on his video alone.

I majored in film, and one of my senior projects was to create a video of some sort. So I decided to create a documentary of my grandfather. So that's why I decided to start the GoFundMe page so that we could start this production. I was super proud, and I'm just honored to be blessed to be his granddaughter.

WILLIAM SALTER: I'm still in awe of the fact that this is happening, because I was quietly living my life, doing what I was doing. Especially at this time in my life, and all of a sudden the doors blew open, and now I'm totally, basically exposed to expressing myself. And I did that already, but now it's catching up with me Fantastic. I love it.
