Juergen Teller’s Guide to Reading Knausgaard: Nearly Nude, in ASICS

No other photographer in fashion is more comfortable not wearing clothes than Juergen Teller, who has posed in every state of undress from basically naked to totally naked, with anything from a gingerly placed newspaper to a celebratory bouquet of balloons.

And the German photographer’s deadpan self-portraiture style is in fine form in the new campaign for Kiko Kostadinov’s ASICS GEL-KORIKA. He holds an ASICS-footed shoe next to a goose. He emerges from a field of greens as if he’s freshly harvested two juicy specimens. He gazes longingly at two arranged almost contrapposto in front of a grand Italian fountain.

But nothing tops the campaign’s star image, where we appear to have interrupted Teller in the middle of an important ritual: taking a brief break from reading Karl Ove Knausgaard’s My Struggle as he weighs himself in tiny pink shorts. Teller stands in profile, wearing his style signature (these pair are a part of Kostadinov’s ASICS collection), and posing with his round belly in full bulbous majesty as he stands on a scale, as if he’s checking in on a long, inspiring journey to weight loss or just wondering if the two pastas he had last night were a true mistake. And on the bathroom counter: the ultimate men book about the ultimate man. On his head: a yellow hat that reads “NO PHOTOS.”

The shoes, which come in four colorways—black, silver, and two wild mixes of pinks, reds, and blues—go on sale globally on November 16, and are strong contenders for this winter’s best running silhouette. Especially if you are planning to read Knausgaard. Especially if you are planning to do it nearly nude. If there’s another way to get through this Norweigan magnum opus, I’m not aware of it.
