MANCHESTER, Mich. — The Jonesville Comets varsity girls basketball team won their 18th game this season with their district semifinal win over the Clinton Redwolves. Jonesville pulled out to a comfortable lead and held on for a 48-24 final.

Jonesville earns another appearance in a district championship matchup. It marks the second year in a row that the Comets – led by head coach Tom Dunn – have won a Big 8 title and then earned a spot in a district title game. They will look to earn their first District title in more than a decade. The Comets are very familiar with making it to the district finals. Since 2010, the team has made it multiple times but they have not been able to earn a title yet.

Jonesville had to battle back against Battle Creek Harper Creek to win a semifinal in overtime during the 2020-21 season. They would then battle a Parma Western team for the district title. Western would eventually lose in the state semifinal game to Portland. The 31-54 loss was crushing for the Comets, but several Senior Comets will look to use their veteran experience in those tough postseason games to help lead their teammates this Friday night.

Standing in the Comets' way of a district championship will be the Brooklyn Columbia Central Golden Eagles. The LCAA opponent goes into the Friday championship game with a 16-4 record. Their tournament resume includes a win over the Hudson Tigers by a final score of 44-24. The Golden Eagles and the Comets last met in a district title game back during the 2015-16 season.

The Golden Eagles would prevail in that contest, winning 48-40. That 2015 Comets squad posted a very similar 19-3 overall record. Both teams are evenly matched across the board, and it should be a close battle determined in the final quarter of play. District title tickets can be bought online at the GoFan website or app. No tickets will be sold at the event in person. Tickets are $7. The game will be played at Manchester High School and will start at 7 p.m.

Leading the way for the Comets in their win over Clinton was Senior Mackenzie Baker who had 19 points and five steals. Senior Lani Bowman had seven points and eight rebounds. Julie Mach had six points. Senior Natalie Doyle had five points, three rebounds and three assists. Haley Mach had four points and three steals. Senior Kylie Ward had two points and three rebounds. Brooklyn Lauwers had three steals. Senior Marissa Lehman had two points and six rebounds. Lyra Nichols had two points and 12 rebounds. Kierstyn Keller had one rebound and one assist. Senior Breanna Thacker had two rebounds and one steal. Gracen Hager had two rebounds. Morgan Baker had one rebound and two steals. Alexis Trine had one point and one steal.
