JoJo Siwa on Her Signature Bow and Changing Up Her Look

JoJo Siwa is ready for a new look.

The YouTuber is often seen sporting an array of bright colors and glitter, and her blonde hair is usually gathered in a high ponytail finished off with her signature oversized bow — but lately, she’s been leaning toward a different style. Last month, she took fans by surprise when she posted a TikTok video showing off her long wavy hair sans bow. It turns out that you might see JoJo without her bow more often — and it wasn’t exactly an easy decision for the young star to make.

As noted by BuzzFeed, JoJo came to a major hair realization shortly after turning 18 on May 19. “I've worn a bow, obviously, for the last 18 years of my life,” the YouTuber told Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, during an interview earlier this week. “I just had my 18th birthday, and it was right around my birthday that I realized, 'You know, I kinda want to do my hair different today.”

JoJo added that it felt like the “right time” to embrace a different look, striving for a “more mature” style, describing the move as an upgrade. “The bow is still a part of my life,” she explained. “I still love bows. I forever will. I mean, they're who I am. But I just, you know, maybe I won't wear it every day.”

Change isn’t always easy, and JoJo revealed that it was actually pretty difficult to fill her mom in on her momentous hair revelation. “My mom actually asked me — because recently, earlier in the year, I came out to the world, and to my family, and essentially to myself too — and so my mom asked me, 'Was it harder to come out to me, or to tell me you wanted to wear your hair different?’” the 18-year-old recounted during her conversation with Mosseri. “I was like, 'It surprisingly was harder to tell you that I wanted to wear my hair different.’”

Of course, JoJo is no stranger to playing around with her look — and she’s shared snippets of herself without her signature JoJo glam before. However JoJo decides to present herself to the world — bow or no bow — her positive energy always seems to transcend every style. And that’s the best accessory anyone could ask for.
