John Oliver makes Mike Pence's rabbit gay for a good cause

On Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the host admitted he is a big fan of Mike and Karen Pence’s pet rabbit, Marlon Bundo. Oliver also admitted that he was interested to learn that the Pences are releasing a children’s book about the bunny titled A Day in the Life of the Vice President.

Oliver said, “I would love to say, ‘Fine, it’s a fun, sweet book about a rabbit, who gives a s***.’ But unfortunately, one of the stops on that book tour is at Focus on the F***ing Family.”

Focus on the Family is a conservative group that actively campaigns against the LGBTQ community, and Oliver went into great depth about some of the gay conversion therapy the group has endorsed.

Upset with the homophobic rhetoric from Mike Pence and Focus on the Family, Oliver decided to publish his own children’s book about the bunny: A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo. Marlon is a little different in Oliver’s book, in that he wears a bowtie and is gay.

All proceeds from the book will go to AIDS United as well as the Trevor Project, which helps LGBTQ youth. Oliver enlisted some big stars to help with the audiobook, which is narrated by Jim Parsons, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jeff Garlin, Ellie Kemper, John Lithgow, Jack McBrayer, and RuPaul.

Oliver made a point to say, “Let me be completely clear about this. This is a real book for children. This is a sweet story about Marlon Bundo falling in love.”

The show ended with Oliver giving the audience a sample of the book, which is available on amazon.com.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver airs Sundays at 11 p.m. on HBO.
