Comedian John Mulaney and artist Anna Marie Tendler are divorcing after six years of marriage.
On Monday, Tendler told Page Six through a spokesperson that she was "heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage."
"I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery," Tendler added in the statement.
Mulaney's representatives also confirmed the split to Page Six, saying that the comedian "will not have any further comment as he continues to focus on his recovery and getting back to work."
The news of the couple's divorce comes months after Mulaney spent 60 days in a rehabilitation facility for alcohol and cocaine addiction.
Tendler's representatives confirmed the news and Tendler's statement to Page Six when reached by Insider. A representative for Mulaney didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
Mulaney and Tendler met during a group trip to Martha's Vineyard in the late 2000s
After meeting over a decade ago, the former couple first went public with their relationship in 2012 when Mulaney mentioned Tendler in a New York Magazine interview where he joked about forgetting her name, only sharing that Tendler "is a makeup artist and hairstylist" who gives him free haircuts.
The same year, Mulaney said, "I really like dating Jewish women," in his stand-up special "New In Town."
"With Jewish women, you do not have to guess what they are thinking … they will tell you," Mulaney joked.
Tendler and Mulaney married two years later, in July 2014, in a 1920s-and woodland-deco-themed wedding in upstate New York. The ceremony was officiated by the former couple's friend, comedian Dan Levy.
"On a beautiful and perfect day, I married a beautiful and perfect woman," Mulaney wrote in an Instagram post commemorating the occasion. "I wish I could live it over and over again.
Mulaney continued to make references to Tendler in his standup routines throughout their marriage, calling Tendler "a dynamite" in his 2018 Netflix special "Kid Gorgeous at Radio City."
Tendler, in turn, supported her husband by appearing on his podcast, "Oh Hello The P'dcast," in May 2020 and also attended the premiere of Mulaney's Netflix special, "John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch" in December 2019.
Mulaney had previously opened up about his history of substance abuse
In December, Page Six reported and People confirmed that Mulaney had checked himself into rehab for cocaine and alcohol abuse.
The former "Saturday Night Live" actor told Esquire in September 2019 that he started drinking when he was 13.
"I drank for attention," he told the publication. "I was really outgoing, and then at 12, I wasn't. I didn't know how to act. And then I was drinking, and I was hilarious again."
Later in the interview, he said that he first became sober at 23 after going "on a bender" with alcohol and drugs one weekend that made him feel like he was "fading in and out of a movie."
"It was just crazy... I didn't kill anyone or assault anyone," Mulaney recalled of the incident that had prompted him to stop drinking alcohol and doing drugs. "But yeah, I was like, 'You're f-----g out of control. And I thought to myself, 'I don't like this guy anymore. I'm not rooting for him.'"
