John Isner beats Milos Raonic in Wimbledon quarterfinal; second American man into Grand Slam semifinal since 2009

John Isner and his massive serve are continuing on to the Wimbledon semifinal.

The big American is into his first-ever Grand Slam semi after a 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Milos Raonic of Canada.

Isner and Sam Querrey (2017 Wimbledon) are the only American men to reach a semifinal since 2009.

Isner won 90 percent of his first serve points

Raonic actually produced more aces than Isner, taking that category 31-25. But Isner was simply dominant when he was able to put his first serve in, winning 90 percent (78 out of 87) of those points. Isner also won 81 percent (30 of 37) of points when he came to the net.

Raonic, also among the tour’s biggest servers, won the first set in a tiebreak, but Isner came back and won the second-set tiebreak to knot things at one set apiece.

In the third set, Isner finally got the break he needed in the fifth game off a Raonic double-fault, one of six on the day for the 27-year-old Canadian. That was all it took for Isner, who closed out the set in straightforward fashion. A similar storyline took place in the fourth and final set, with Isner taking the fifth game to go up a break. The 33-year-old American earned another break to close things out, hitting a beautiful backhand up the line with Raonic at the net.

Isner is yet to be broken at Wimbledon

In an incredible display of serving prowess, Isner hasn’t been broken in five matches at Wimbledon this year. Isner creates incredible power and tough angles with his 6’10” frame, and his three sets dropped this tournament have all been in a tiebreaker. Raonic only had a single break opportunity against Isner, which he failed to convert.

Isner will face Kevin Anderson

Next up for Isner is 32-year-old Kevin Anderson of South Africa. Anderson is coming off a massive upset over Roger Federer in which he came from two sets down to earn a well-deserved victory over the tournament’s top seed.

Isner’s best finish at Wimbledon previous to this year was the third round, and his best finish ever at a Grand Slam prior to this was a quarterfinal appearance at the 2011 US Open. If Isner comes out on top against Anderson, he’ll be the first American man to make a Grand Slam final since Andy Roddick at the 2009 Wimbledon championships. If Isner wins it all, he’ll be the first American man to win a Slam since Roddick at the 2003 US Open.
