For the past 27 years, TV specials, made-for-TV movies, and tabloid stories have examined the lives of the Buttafuoco family. It began when a 17-year-old girl named Amy Fisher shot Joey Buttafuoco's wife Mary Jo in the face on May 19, 1992 in Long Island, New York.

In November 1993, Joey was charged and sentenced to six months for statutory rape after being in a sexual relationship with Amy starting at the age of 16 (New York law's age of consent is 17). Amy was arrested and charged with attempted murder; she was released from prison in 1999. Mary Jo survived the attack, but told Oprah Winfrey that she suffered from facial paralysis and ear damage.

Now, nearly three decades after the infamous '90s crime case, ABC's 20/20 promises to provide more details in a two-hour special entitled Growing Up Buttafuoco. Joey and Mary Jo's daughter Jessie, who was nine years old at the time of the event, is set to tell the story from her perspective, as well.

Currently, Joey is working on a movie about his early life, according to ABC News. Three years after the 1992 case, Joey ended up getting arrested again for soliciting a vice cop posing as a prostitute. Then, he was sentenced to a year in jail and five years' probation in March 2004 after pleading guilty to insurance fraud. He also served three months for illegally possessing ammunition in 2007.

Joey and Mary Jo divorced in 2003. Two years later, he got married to Evanka Franjko.

Over the years, Joey has made several TV appearances, including on Celebrity Boxing, Judge Jeanine Pirro, and The Howard Stern Show.

According to his daughter, Joey is now turning over a new leaf.

"He's in a growth phase where he's in therapy and he's healing ... I hope he’s not using it to justify why he made so many poor decisions," the 36-year-old told ABC. "I like this new man he's becoming."

After splitting with Joey in 2003, Mary Jo continued to appear on various TV shows like Larry King Live, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and The Dr. Oz Show. In 2009, her book Getting It Through My Thick Skull: Why I Stayed, What I Learned, and What Millions of People Involved with Sociopaths Need to Know came out and landed on the New York Times' bestseller list. Three years later, she married Stu Tendler.

For years, the results of Mary Jo's injuries lingered. But in 2017, People reported that she had undergone surgery to repair her partially paralyzed faced. Her doctor at the time was able repair some of the nerves that had kept her from smiling.

“It’s the first time in 25 years that when I smile, I can see the side of my teeth,” Mary Jo told Inside Edition.

Following her release from prison in 1999, Amy stayed in Long Island and wrote newspaper columns and a book called If I Knew Then, according to A&E. Four years later, she married former New York City police officer Louis Bellera. Amy asserts that Louis guided her toward a career in the sex industry, a claim that Louis denied to the New York Post. The two divorced in 2015. Amy now has three kids.

Like Mary Jo and Joey, Amy has appeared on multiple TV segments and shows. She has legally changed her name and is now residing in Long Island after previously living in Florida with her kids, reports the Post.
