Joe Burrow breaks LSU's single-season passing TD record in 7 games
It took Joe Burrow fewer than seven games to throw more touchdowns than any other LSU quarterback has in a full season.
Burrow threw his 29th TD pass of the season against Mississippi State on Saturday to break the school record for most passing touchdowns in a single season. The 29th TD came on Burrow’s fourth touchdown of the game and went to Justin Jefferson.
Matt Mauck set the old record with 28 touchdown passes in 2003 and former No. 1 NFL draft pick JaMarcus Russell tied in 2006. Burrow entered Saturday’s game with 25 touchdowns in six games after he threw three touchdowns in LSU’s 42-28 win over Florida in Week 7.
Burrow’s TD total has made him a Heisman favorite through the first half of the season. Assuming Burrow keeps throwing scores and LSU keeps winning games, he’ll be in serious consideration for the award along with Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts and Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa.
Entering Week 8, Tagovailoa was the only quarterback with more passing TDs than Burrow. He threw 27 through Alabama’s six games.
It’s also not insane to think that Burrow could challenge LSU’s career passing touchdown record despite playing just two seasons for the Tigers. Especially if LSU plays in the SEC championship game and the College Football Playoff. The Ohio State transfer has 45 career touchdown passes since the start of the 2018 season. That puts him seven TDs behind Russell and 24 behind Tommy Hodson on the career passing TD list.
You can’t rule out 24 touchdowns over the next six or even eight games at this rate. That’s just how good Burrow has been both compared to other quarterbacks in 2019 and all other LSU quarterbacks of the past.
