Joe Biden Removed Donald Trump’s Diet Coke Button From the Oval Office

Joe Biden isn't just getting a head start on undoing the damage wrought by Donald Trump's single term as president of the United States.

Sure, on day one, he's already signed a stack of executive orders revoking Trump's Muslim Ban, rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement, mandating masks be worn on federal property, and more. However, he's also made a slight adjustment to the Oval Office.

According to political commentator Tom Newton Dunn, Biden has removed a special button on Trump's desk that was used to summon a butler with a fresh can of Diet Coke. Yes, that's right. The red button featured on Trump's desk was not some emergency nuclear launch button, but a call for room service.

“President Biden has removed the Diet Coke button,” Dunn tweeted on January 21. “When [Tim Shipman] and I interviewed Donald Trump in 2019, we became fascinated by what the little red button did. Eventually Trump pressed it, and a butler swiftly brought in a Diet Coke on a silver platter. It's gone now.”

Of course, Twitter has opinions. “Counteroffer: defund the police and keep the diet coke button,” one user tweeted. Another added, “Just absolutely brutal, folks. It's only President Biden's second day in office, and already he's erased the greatest legacy of the Trump administration.”

Funny enough, this is not the first we've heard of the magical Diet Coke button. “Midway through my April 23, 2017, interview with President Donald Trump, he reached over and pressed a red button on his desk in the Oval Office,” Associated Press reporter Julie Pace wrote in a piece about his first 100 days in office. “It didn’t trigger a nuclear launch or send advisers scurrying into the room. Instead, a White House butler walked in with a glass of Diet Coke on a silver tray for the commander in chief.”

According to Time magazine, Trump joked about his gadget with a Financial Times reporter, saying, “Everyone does get a little nervous when I press that button.”
