President-elect Joe Biden gave his final remarks in Delaware today before heading off to Washington, D.C., alongside wife Jill Biden for tomorrow’s inauguration.

The future commander in chief spoke to an intimate crowd at the Major Joseph R. “Beau” Biden III National Guard/Reserve Center, named after the politician’s late son, in New Castle, Del., this afternoon. Biden himself was emotional as he spoke, thanking friends and family for all their support over the years.

His wife Jill appeared teary-eyed as well as she proudly watched alongside Hunter Biden, Joe’s son from his first marriage, and his wife Melissa Cohen. The first-lady-to-be opted for a poignant purple look for the occasion, layering a violet coordinating coat and shift dress with lilac gloves and a floral face mask; all three pieces come from New York-based independent designer Jonathan Cohen’s collections. Her clutch bag from Tyler Ellis also came in a bright purple shade as well.

In politics, purple is oftentimes thought to be a symbol of unity as it combines the Republican party’s red motif and the Democratic party’s blue color scheme. The shade can also serve as a nod to the suffragette flag, supporting women’s right to vote.

To then balance out the potent colors of her ensemble, the former educator opted for a neutral footwear moment; her shoe of choice came in the form of a suede pointed-toe pump set atop a steep stiletto heel, all coated in a blush nude upper. The design hails from Jimmy Choo in the brand’s Love silhouette; you can shop the future first lady’s choice of colorway for $650 at Farfetch.com.

Following his speech, President-Elect Biden and his wife headed to New Castle Airport to board a plane on their way to Washington, D.C., to meet his running mate, Kamala Harris. In less than 24 hours, Biden and Harris’ inauguration will make history for a myriad of reasons.

In addition to his new title, Biden will also become the oldest person ever sworn in as president while Harris will be the first-ever female vice president of the United States. The daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, she will also be the first Black and first person of South Asian descent to serve in the second-highest office. The politician recently resigned her Senate seat ahead of her new position. She will join President-elect Joe Biden in leading a country left on the edge of its seat following the second impeachment of current President Donald Trump by the House of Representatives last week.

The inauguration ceremony takes place at noon ET tomorrow, Jan. 20, with heightened security measures in place due to the increased threat of armed protests and riots across the country. While the proceedings will look different due to health and safety precautions as well, there is still fanfare to be expected. Lady Gaga is set to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” appearing alongside the likes of Garth Brooks, Jennifer Lopez, John Legend and more major names slated to perform on Inauguration Day.
