Luke and Lucie Meier continue to forge a new image for the Jil Sander brand, tempering the house’s signature sharpness and minimalism with a warm, human touch. The men’s fall 2021 collection — presented in a short movie filmed at a decadent, fascinating castle in Saint-Martin-du-Tertre, less then an hour’s drive from Paris — offered an interesting, charming take on masculinity, one which doesn’t shy away from revealing intimate emotions.

They conveyed this by melding sophisticated, modern tailoring with cozy elements, and arty, decorative touches. Impeccable coats and luxurious, ample sweaters were embellished with romantic black-and-white portraits of Bauhaus female artists shot in the 1920s by Florence Henri. The high necks of sweaters were fastened by jeweled buttons and many looks were accessorized with hammered silver necklaces, some featuring charms spelling out the word “mother.”

These special details added an emotional touch not only to the roomy knits, but also the suits, composed of elongated blazers and lean zippered pants, and the slender outerwear, crafted from felt or more technical coated cotton.

The colors heightened the delicate message: white, beige, chocolate brown and black juxtaposed with delicate touches of lilac and mint green, as well as bright yellow and aqua.

Fully aware of the unsettling times we are experiencing, the Meiers felt a responsibility to show the most comforting and welcoming face of fashion. They gave a new, appealing vibe to familiar staples and uncomplicated silhouettes, pointing out that emotional vulnerability can actually become one’s biggest strength.
