Later this year, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will travel to Boston to celebrate the second annual Earthshot prize. "The @EarthshotPrize is back and this year, we're heading to Boston!" William shared in a Twitter post announcing the news earlier this week. "Five more winners. Game-changing solutions. More potential to save our planet. Boston, we'll see you in December."

The location of the event is no coincidence. This year's awards are being put on in partnership with both Boston's mayor, Michelle Wu, and the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation.

Prince William has previously shared that JFK and his famous 1961 "moonshot" speech served as inspiration for the Earthshot initiative.

“I’ve long been inspired by President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 mission to put a man on the moon within a decade. He named it the Moonshot. It seemed crazy. We’d only just launched the first satellite. Putting a man on the moon that quickly seemed impossible,” William said in a Ted talk in July 2021.

He continued, “In taking that giant leap for mankind, the team behind the Moonshot united millions of people around the world — that this crazy ambition wasn’t so crazy after all.”

Now, William said, “we must harness the spirit of human ingenuity and purpose on and turn it with laser-sharp focus and urgency on the most pressing challenge we have ever faced: Repairing our planet.”

Following the announcement of the awards' location, JFK's only grandson, Jack Kennedy Schlossberg, shared his support on social media. "Earth shot baby !" he wrote on Twitter, responding to a video shared by the JFK library:

He also reposted a video shared by the Earthshot Prize.

At this point, it's unclear what if any role Schlossberg will play in the 2022 awards ceremony, but we'll continue to report on details as they are made public.
