Singer and fashion designer Jessica Simpson revealed she has been sober since 2017 after battling addiction to alcohol and pills, according to PEOPLE.

In an excerpt from her upcoming memoir, Open Book, published in PEOPLE, Jessica said she battled addiction that stemmed from emotional trauma surrounding her career and from sexual abuse that she experienced as a young girl.

“I was killing myself with all the drinking and pills,” she wrote.

Jessica wrote that events at a Halloween party in 2017 actually prompted her to stop drinking and wrote that she told her friends at the time that "I need to stop. Something’s got to stop. And if it’s the alcohol that’s doing this, and making things worse, then I quit."

She revealed that she hasn't had a drink since November 2017.

"Giving up the alcohol was easy,” she went on to write. “I was mad at that bottle. At how it allowed me to stay complacent and numb.”

Still, Jessica also wrote about her treatment plan, which includes a supportive network of friends and family, a team of doctors, and attending therapy twice a week. She said that admitting she needed help getting sober gave her “a continual gift."

“When I finally said I needed help, it was like I was that little girl that found her calling again in life,” Jessica said. “I found direction and that was to walk straight ahead with no fear.”

Open Book is now available for pre-order on Amazon and will be out on February 4.
