  • Critics said Maxwell was too young to have colored hair.

What's a girl to do when she debuts a new 'do? Share it with all her friends and followers, of course. But, when Jessica Simpson helped her daughter, Maxwell, show off a new hairstyle on Instagram, the internet was not. having. it.

The singer and actress shared a series of photos of her daughter, Maxwell, during and after a visit to the hair salon. The result? A fun, new multi-colored hue on the ends of the 7-year-old's hair. Jessica also shared a photo of the color process, with Maxwell sitting in the chair surrounded by Nine Zero One Salon stylists.

Jessica captioned the photo: "Inspired by The Descendants #901girl #MAXIDREW." The purple, pink, and blue dye job takes a cue from characters with colorful hair in the Disney Channel franchise, and it comes just in time for the release of the newest Descendants' installment.

Cue the mom-shamers. Soon enough, questions and criticism of Jessica filled her comments section. One said, "Isn't she too young to have her hair dyed?" Another wrote, "So young its a shame." One commenter asked, "Why start ruining her hair so young."

Though the masses might be offering up unsolicited opinions, they also might be on the right track. Jessica didn't share details about the exact hair dye used, but it's not a recommended practice for parents, according to Dr. Sejal Shah, MD, a New York-based dermatological surgeon.

"I really don't think it's safe to dye or bleach a child's hair until after puberty, and ideally not until their late teens—at least 16," Dr. Sejal told Good Housekeeping.

Still, not everyone criticized Jessica's parenting choice. One commenter shared: "Looks awesome!!! The negative people can go kick rocks! My daughter has been getting fun colors in her hair since she was 4. She’s almost 11 now and just had highlights done. It’s not harmful, or permanent and it’s a fun way for kids to express themselves." And the Disney Descendants account even commented: "Looking good!

In spite of the mom-shamers, it looks like Maxwell is having a very good hair day.
