What do you get when you combine Jessica Chastain, Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy? This badass film.

Introducing Lawless, an R-rated crime flick that’s gaining popularity on the streaming service. Although it originally premiered in 2012, it just recently claimed the number nine spot on Netflix’s list of most-watched movies. (It’s currently ranked behind Bad Trip, Secret Magic Control Agency, Seaspiracy, A Week Away, Yes Day and Elizabeth & Margaret: Love and Loyalty.)

The movie takes place in 1931 and follows the Bondurant brothers: Forrest (Hardy), Howard (Jason Clarke) and Jack (LaBeouf). According to the citizens of Franklin County, Virginia, the brothers run a gas station slash restaurant, where Maggie (Chastain) is employed as a waitress. In reality, the business is disguising their true mission: bootlegging.

Although the police have allowed it to continue, everything changes when Special Agent Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce) arrives in town and threatens to shut down the operation.

Lawless also stars Gary Oldman (Floyd Banner), Mia Wasikowska (Bertha Minnix), Dane DeHaan (Cricket Pate), Chris McGarry (Danny), Tim Tolin (Mason Wardell), Lew Temple (Deputy Henry Abshire), Marcus Hester (Deputy Jeff Richards), Bill Camp (Sheriff Hodges), Alex Van (Tizwell Minnix) and Noah Taylor (Gummy Walsh).

The film was directed by John Hillcoat (The Proposition). Although the story is based on Matt Bondurant’s historical novel The Wettest County in the World, the screenplay was written by Nick Cave (Ghosts of the Civil Dead).

Guess we have plans tonight after all.
