Jessica Alba Has a Brilliant Hack For Avoiding Morning Hair Flyaways

Jessica Alba is a woman who wears many hats. She's an A-list actress, mother of three, and a successful businesswoman. And just like the rest of us, she's always searching for ways to get more sleep — or at least look like she has.

While she's candid about the struggles of juggling all the components of her hectic life, Alba's still got a few brilliant beauty and life hacks under her belt that have helped her find some balance and unwind after a long day. We chatted with the Honest Co. entrepreneur about her full nighttime and morning beauty situation (including which of her brand's products she actually uses), and why even the busiest moms should still make time to have a dedicated skincare routine.

As a busy mom and businesswoman, how do you wind down at the end of a long day?

First and foremost, I get into cozy loungewear and throw my hair into a messy bun. Then I recap the day with the kiddos over dinner, followed by giving the baby a bath and a good cuddle — this fills my soul and helps reset my mind and spirit. Being present with my littles is my favorite way to de-stress and unwind on the daily. I also enjoy a bath with a glass of wine and a good book. I often add a face mask and a hair mask as part of my weekly wind-down routine.

Take us through your nighttime skincare routine. What are a few essential products?

If I’m in a full face of makeup, I like to use the Honest Beauty Magic Gel-to-Milk Cleanser, which helps break down makeup and impurities. Then I’ll double cleanse using the Gentle Gel Cleanser because I like my skin to feel squeaky clean. Then I apply Beauty Sleep Resurfacing Serum about three times a week. It works overnight to dissolve away dead skin cells leaving me with refreshed, glowy skin. After I like to use the Deep Hydration Face Cream under my eyes and Magic Beauty Balm on my lips and eyelids. Sometimes I also add the Hydrogel Cream around my lips and under my eyes, which I slather and leave on without rubbing it in, letting it absorb. Then, I always finish everything off with the Elevated Hydration Mist.

I also like to spray the ends of my hair with a leave-in conditioner and twist it up so I wake up with less flyaways.

Why do you think it’s important for other busy women to make time for a nighttime skin routine?

A skincare routine can sometimes be the only “me” time that people have in their days. When you are doing something just for yourself, it’s a nice reminder that you matter, and that taking time to take care of yourself is important.

Are there ever nights when you can’t sleep? What helps you get some rest?

So many nights. I’ve tried it all, including the Olly Melatonin Gummies and putting my phone away in a drawer before bed. I find that taking a bath always helps. To be honest, I struggle with sleep and even when I don’t necessarily get my beauty sleep, the Beauty Sleep Resurfacing Serum allows me to wake up looking like I have — it’s a nice cheat. But I’m very open to advice on how to get more restful nights sleep!

Once you're up, what helps you to feel awake and ready to take on the day?

I like to start off every day by hydrating my skin. When I wake up I put Honest Beauty Vitamin C Radiance Serum on and then I slather a thick layer of the Hydrogel Cream all over my face. I like to follow that up by curling my lashes. I’m also a multi-tasker, so I’m usually brushing my teeth while doing my skincare routine. Even if I’m going to take a shower later, I always feel more awake and ready to go when my skin is hydrated first thing in the morning.

I also love a good cup of coffee, but I try to chug a decent amount of water beforehand — between half a liter and a liter. One of my favorite things to do in the morning is to get a cuddle from my kids. I give them all big morning hugs and a smooch. The time crunch of getting the kids up and ready for school or getting to work usually gets my adrenaline going to start the day. Some of my favorite days are when I have time to crush a 45-minute hard cardio workout before the kids wake up. I’ll usually take a Spin class which will get me home around 7 a.m., which is normally when the kids wake up. Those are the days I feel most productive.
