He wasn't actually the original choice.

Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams' wedding was a beautiful celebration of love, and, as expected, many Modern Family cast members were present, including Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

But Ferguson wasn't just a simple party guest, as he had the honor of officiating the wedding and pronouncing Hyland and Adams married.

However, the Tony Award-winning actor revealed that he wasn't the person who was originally meant to do it.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of his new movie, Ivy + Bean, Ferguson shared that Ty Burrell–who played Phil Dunphy in Modern Family, the father of Hyland's character, Haley Dunphy–was meant to be the officiant.

He said, "I don’t know if people know this, but Ty Burrell was meant to do it, and there was a family emergency."

Ferguson explained how he was asked to step in, saying, "So, I got a phone call 12 days before the wedding, and that’s why Ty wasn’t there, he had stuff going on.”

It was Ferguson's first time officiating a wedding, so he felt the pressure. The 46-year-old shared his internal monologue before the big day and how he kept thinking, "Well, no pressure this is my first time, and then it’s going to be a wedding, and it’s going to be in Vogue magazine, and there’s also going to be paparazzi shots of me from a helicopter, officiating, no pressure."

Luckily, he was able to reach out to Burrell and get some guidance, saying, "But I did call Ty, 'Like what are some of your bullet points that you were going to talk about, because I need to fast track this.' He hadn't written anything up, but he had some ideas, and I was like, 'Oh, this is all really good. This is a jumping-off place.'"

Despite not being the one originally asked to officiate, Ferguson took on the position with grace and honor and did an amazing job with Hyland and Wells' ceremony.

"I was honored to do it. Very happy to understudy Ty Burrell," he confessed.

During his interview at the premiere, Ferguson also stated that the whole Modern Family cast was invited to the wedding, but not everyone could make it, which is why there were only some people present at the celebration.

In addition to Ferguson, the guest list included Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Sofia Vergara, and Julie Bowen.
