APPLETON – Jeremy Clifton is out after four games as Appleton West head football coach.

Clifton, who was named the program's head coach before this season, resigned effective immediately, according to a post on his Twitter account.

Appleton West is 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the Valley Football Association. The Terrors' lone win came in Week 1, 44-21, over Manitowoc Lincoln. They would go on to lose their next three games — 40-14 to Appleton East, 44-22 to D.C. Everest and, last week, 40-8 to Hortonville.

West has a home game this week against Marian Central Catholic from Woodstock, Illinois.

Clifton cited health concerns as one of the reasons and that "it is now apparent to me that I must abstain from pursuing those goals as the cost has become too great for my family and me, especially for my health."

Clifton also said he'll be resigning his academic position in the Appleton Area School District and won't be doing either coaching or teaching "for the foreseeable future for very much the same reasons."

Appleton West associate principal for activities John Miller said assistant coaches Jon Lamers and Dom Thompson will be the team's interim co-head coaches.

Miller added the West administration will begin the formal process of hiring a new head football coach after the season is complete.
