Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian Mask Together in a New Portal Commercial
Kim Kardashian West and Jennifer Lopez are both beauty-industry moguls, media darlings, coupled with also-famous partners, and two of the most famous clients of hairstylist Chris Appleton, so it's no surprise that they would be friends. There's so much the two superstars can talk about with each other that others simply wouldn't be able to relate to, so it's nice that they can confide in each other. And while they may not have sleepover spa nights together, a new commercial suggests that's not all that far off from what their conversations are like.
Debuting on Thanksgiving, the new ad shows Lopez and Kardashian West using Facebook's new video-call service, Portal. They chat with each other on a tablet and big-screen TV, respectively, and in a nod to their impact as beauty influencers, both are wearing face masks — Kardashian West in a green one, her super-long hair pulled off her face in a high ponytail, and Lopez wearing a pink one.
"Kim, I love that Portal lets us have time together," Lopez says as she walks around her kitchen in plaid pajamas.
"I know, right? I have so many amazing ideas for the holiday party," Kardashian West responds, confirming to Lopez that her plans are top-secret.
It's at this point we learn that it's not only Kardashian West that Lopez does a little skin-care bonding with. The entertainment icon's fiancé, baseball legend Alex Rodriguez, pops up in the kitchen wearing not only matching pajamas but a matching pink face mask, too. The video call skews awkward as the ladies try to downplay what they're talking about, Rodriguez not quite getting the hint that it's a conversation between A and B and he should C himself out.
Rodriguez recently told People that he really admires the relationship between Lopez and Kardashian West. "Kim and Jennifer are very, very close, and she’s almost like a mentee of Jennifer, and Jennifer’s mentored her a lot over the years," he said. "Now, they just go back and forth. They mentor each other and they have this really beautiful relationship that goes back over a decade and a half, and it’s nice to do anything with Kim and our family."
And hopefully, that means frequent masked video calls.
