Jennifer Lopez Just Revealed Why She Almost Didn’t Wear That Iconic Versace Dress at the Grammys

When Jennifer Lopez sashayed across the Grammys red carpet in 2000, she didn’t think that she would go down in history as a fashion legend. The “On the Floor” singer recently opened up about that iconic Versace jungle-print dress and the most surprising fact of all: that she almost didn’t wear it.

During the premiere of her new YouTube series, Moments of Fashion, Lopez got candid about the story behind that dress. Right before the biggest awards show, the actress had been filming The Wedding Planner with Matthew McConaughey. She admits that the entire look was put together super last minute…and when we say “last minute,” we mean the day of the Grammys. (Talk about stressful.)

Lopez’s stylist at the time, Andrea Lieberman, only had time to pull together two possible options, the plunging Versace dress and a white dress that never saw the light of day.

“Usually, if you come to a fitting of mine, there are tons of dresses and tons of shoes. It’s crazy. But this day, we really had a choice between two dresses,” the Bronx native said.

Lieberman strongly advocated for the white dress because the jungle-print dress had already been seen on three other people, including Donatella Versace herself. “It’s been seen. This is the Grammys. You need to wear something else,” her stylist urged. Lopez insisted on trying on both.

When she came out in the green dress, Benny Medina, long-time manager and “trusted consigliere” (as Lopez called him), knew that they had struck gold. “That’s it. That’s it. Don’t even talk about it. That’s the dress,” he said.

Despite being told that the dress would be a major fashion no-no, the next day Lopez appeared in every major headline.

“I was like, this man just broke records but people want to know about this dress!” Lopez said, referring to Santana’s 11-Grammy win. “It was the craziest thing. But it just goes to show you the power of fashion.”

So, how can we get Benny Medina to say yes to our dress?
