Jennifer Lopez's Daughter Stole the Super Bowl 2020 Halftime Show With a Powerful, Political Duet

Emme, 11, performed "Let's Get Loud" with mom J. Lo during the Super Bowl.

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira stole the show and won our hearts with an epic halftime performance at Sunday's Super Bowl 2020 game. And as we scour the internet for a GIF of every can't-miss-moment, another star has emerged from the show.

Following Sunday's Super Bowl, many on social media applauded the duet between J.Lo and her 11-year-old daughter, Emme Muñiz. Mother and daughter performed with the backing of a children's choir, Vogue reported, singing "Let's Get Loud" and a cover of "Born in the U.S.A." The showstopping collab proved that the future of music is definitely in the hands of Emme, but the performance also earned praise for its political message.

For her cover of "Born in the U.S.A.," Jennifer wore the Puerto Rican flag around her shoulders. Some took the fashion choice as a possible political message, suggesting that she wore it as a reminder to President Donald Trump that, yes, Puerto Rico is part of the United States.

The duet also included children covering the field in structures that appeared to resemble cages, Vanity Fair reported. Some theorized the decorations were a reference to children being separated from their parents and sitting in cages after being detained by U.S. immigration officials.

Under a ruling from the Trump administration, a "zero-tolerance" immigration policy was unveiled; as part of the policy, parents and their children, even babies, were allowed to be separated at the border, which resulted in children being placed in immigration processing centers, some with horrific conditions. Following public outrage over the condition of the centers, Trump later signed an executive order officially ending the policy, though it continues for certain families.

Although J.Lo didn't specify whether the the cage-like structures and her flag were related to political messaging, Vanity Fair reported that the singer, whose parents are from Puerto Rico, has provided monetary support to the area.

When Hurricane Maria hit the island in September 2017, Jennifer donated $1 million to relief efforts, The New York Times reported at the time. ABC News reported that she had also traveled to Puerto Rico in January 2018, and at that time had called for aid to the island, saying, "We just want to be treated equally. We're Americans."
