President Donald Trump changed Jennifer Lawrence's mind about politics. During an appearance on Dear Media's Absolutely Not podcast, Lawrence told host Heather McMahan that before the Trump presidency, she identified as "a little Republican" and that in her first election, she voted for John McCain. However, after seeing Trump's administration and the current state of the nation, Lawrence said that she shifted her views, going so far as to endorse former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris in the 2020 presidential election.

"I grew up Republican. My first time voting, I voted for John McCain. I was a little Republican," Lawrence said.

She went on to explain that her upbringing let her "see the fiscal benefits of some of the Republican policies." Though at the same time, she realized that "the social issues weren't in line with [her] views."

Eventually, Lawrence said that she "changed [her] politics based on the things [she] learned." But one thing cemented her decision: the 2016 election. She told McMahan that when "Donald Trump got elected," everything changed.

"This is an impeached president who's broken many laws and has refused to condemn white supremacy, and it feels like there has been a line drawn in the sand. I don't think it’s right," she said. "It just changes things for me. I don't want to support a president who supports white supremacists."

Lawrence went on to compare the Trump presidency to Barack Obama's, saying that she remembered a time when Obama would go for long periods without making headlines, because things were so stable and certain.

People would "go days, maybe weeks, without thinking about the president because everything would generally be OK," she said.

As part of V Magazine's Thought Leaders issue, Lawrence endorsed Biden and Harris, noting Biden's selflessness and his concern for the safety of the American people as important factors in her decision.

"I'm voting for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris this year because Donald Trump has and will continue to put himself before the safety and well-being of America," she told V. "He does not represent my values as an American, and most importantly as a human being."

Like many other people, Lawrence spoke on the importance of voting and this election specifically, saying, "voting is the foundation of our democracy and our freedom," adding that she "would consider this upcoming election the most consequential of our lifetime."
