Jennifer Lawrence Once Tried to Jump Out of a Plane Thanks to Her Anxiety

The Oscar winner gets super claustrophobic while flying.

Getting seated next to a beloved megacelebrity on a plane might sound like a dream come true, but stars don't necessarily handle flying any better than the rest of us. Jennifer Lawrence, for instance, gets anxiety on planes, going so far as to compare the experience to some of her most intense acting scenes. (Also, she typically flies private, so you're definitely not bumping into her on the way to the lavatory.)

Talking to Entertainment Weekly about her new film, Mother!, Lawrence described parts of the movie as particularly difficult because of losing control. "It’s scary not being able to control yourself — I’ve recently had problems with plane anxiety and it’s really similar," she said. "I’m not afraid of the airplane, I’m afraid of me on the airplane and losing control of myself."

The difference is subtle, but it matters: Many people who have repeated panic attacks—especially those dealing with panic disorder—are triggered by just the idea of having a panic attack, the Mayo Clinic explains, not necessarily by any external factor.

Of course, once the shot is wrapped, Lawrence can take a break and generally calm down—unlike flying, where there is nowhere to go. "I tried to jump out of an Air France flight once," she revealed. "I can’t believe I didn’t get arrested. I got really claustrophobic and I had to get out."

And, apparently, she's a screamer. "You know when they hit an air pocket and it feels like you’re falling? I [yelled] on a night flight one time: 'We’re going down! It’s coming down!'" she recalled to Entertainment Weekly. In the actress's defense (not that fear needs a defense, but yelling on a plane isn't advisable), her private plane did suffer a midair engine failure earlier this summer, requiring an emergency landing (no one was injured).

Perhaps on her next flight, Lawrence can listen to some Beyoncé; she told EW that during the rehearsal process for Mother!, she listened to Lemonade "to stay calm and centered." If anything is going to help keep planes airborne—and keep us chill—it's the power of Beyoncé.
