  • The cover spotlighted her breakout role as CIA secret agent Sydney Bristow in the ABC drama Alias.

  • “Twenty years ago this week,” she captioned the post.

If you just glanced at Jennifer Garner’s latest Instagram—a Rolling Stone cover that pictures her in a leather two-piece showing off her toned abs—you’d think the photo was taken yesterday. In reality, though, the cover graced newsstands 20 years ago, spotlighting Garner’s role as Sydney Bristow in the ABC drama Alias.

“Twenty years ago this week. 👧🏻🎸🙈 @rollingstone,” she captioned the post. Friends and fans showered the actress with praise, pointing out that, somehow, she hasn’t aged a bit. “You look the same. Gorgeous,” Rita Wilson commented. “🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌 you were one of my idols, still are lady!” another wrote. “Seems like yesterday-ish! 😉” her Alias co-star Kevin Weisman added.

For many of Garner’s followers, the post stirred up memories of the show, which ran from 2001 to 2006. Her character Bristow was a CIA secret agent posing as an operative for SD-6, a criminal espionage organization. That explains why the Rolling Stone cover described her as: “Just your average butt-kicking coed in leather.”

To put it frankly, Bristow was pretty badass—Garner even did her own stunts and fight scenes.

“She knows every language! She can memorize up to 400 numbers!” one person commented on Garner’s post. “Oh Sydney Bristow, we miss you,” another wrote. “I’m hoping for a reboot!!” someone else added.

It wasn’t just viewers who were inspired by Bristow, either. It was a breakout role for Garner that gave her confidence to keep moving through the acting world. “I’m so attached to her,” she told Good Morning America of the secret agent in 2018. “First of all, she defined me to the world. But she defined me to myself. I became more powerful because of her. I became more empowered because of her. I felt stronger, smarter... I learned how hard I could work.”

Although Garner’s looks are strikingly similar to what they were 20 years ago (which might have something to do with her fav retinol serum and her desire to “normalize looking normal”), a lot has changed in her life since Alias. She now has three children (her first daughter with Ben Affleck, Violet, was 4 months old when the show ended) and owns her family’s West Virginia farm, which supplies organic produce to her kids’ snack brand, Once Upon a Farm.

Plus, she remains a busy actress—having recently starred in the family film Yes Day and with multiple TV projects in the works. Her roles are much different now, but there’s no doubt she could still rock that leather moment today.
