Jennifer Garner’s Hairstylist Shares Behind-the-Scenes Look at Her 2018 Oscars Blowout

Jennifer Garner's voluminous hairstyle for the 2018 Oscars may look like the big, bouncy blowouts we've seen on the red carpet for what feels like forever, but according to her hairstylist Adir Abergel, the star's style isn't like all the rest. Instead, it's an ode to all the famous old-Hollywood styles that have come before it. "I pulled a lot of images of Sofia Loren, early Elizabeth Taylor, where the hair was big and sexy yet effortless," Abergel tells Allure. "The key to the style is shiny, healthy hair."

Before jumping into the look, Abergel says he turned up the music (George Michael, for those wondering) and got emotional. (Yes, really.) "Jennifer Garner is one of my favorite human beings on the planet," he says. "Getting her ready, I get very emotional. We laugh, we cry…. The ambience is really cool."

The look, which featured an unexpected deep side part (a far cry from Garner's go-to center part) paired with mega volume, movement, and bounce, began with a solid wash and condition. (Abergel used the Virtue Full Volume Shampoo and Conditioner, with conditioner only on the ends of the hair.) Once washed, Garner's hair was wrapped into an Aquis Hair Turban to "absorb excess moisture without roughing up the cuticle," says Abergel.

Because Abergel wanted to give Garner's hair a shiny, soft finish, he raked the Virtue 6-In-1 Styler from the midlengths to the ends before blow-drying. Abergel then pinned sections into barrel curls until hair was cool to "maximize memory and volume."

Between steps, he ran back and forth between clients, including Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan. "It was a crazy-exciting day for me," Abergel says. "I got Jen mostly ready, then ran back to finish Saoirse, and then ran back to put the finishes touches on Jen."

To create the soft, bouncy volume seen in the final look, the hairtylist brushed out the hair and added subtle waves with the GHD Gold 18K Pro Styler. As a final step, hair was swept to the side in a deep side part and sprayed with Virtue's Finale Shaping Spray.
