Jenna Ortega Doesn't Want to Do the Wednesday Dance Anymore

Jenna Ortega is officially over the infamous Wednesday dance. Or is she? The star, who is set to host SNL on March 11, poked fun at the viral power of the now-iconic dance in a promo skit ahead of her appearance, saying she's ready for “something new.”

In the short video, Jenna is holding a script and chatting with the three members of Please Don't Destroy. "Honestly, this is really well-written, I just don't feel like I want to do the Wednesday dance for promo since we've seen so much of that already," she shares. "I think it's time to do something new." A quick pan to the actors reveals that they're each dressed as Wednesday Addams in her black ruffled Rave'N Dance gown, complete with braided wigs with bangs. The guys pretend they, too, don't want to do the dance. "I just didn't know because you're all dressed exactly like Wednesday... down to the frill," Jenna says.

Eventually, after a little gentle teasing from the three comedians, Jenna agrees to do the dance as the remixed TikTok version of "Bloody Mary" plays in the background. Not exactly enthusiastically, but hey, we get it — she's been doing it for months and talking about it during every interview. It's only natural she'd be a little bored with it.

But to say the dance went viral is an understatement; everyone from Lady Gaga to North West has tried their hand at the choreography. Jenna was not prepared for the overwhelming response to the now-iconic dance, telling Jimmy Fallon that she barely practiced it — she even lied to Wednesday creator Tim Burton about her progress on choreographing it.

“He was like, 'I know you got it, you've been working on it, I'm not even worried about it. I trust you.' And I said, 'Oh, yeah. You know, it's all so good,'” said Jenna. However, she hadn't actually had time to work on it given the constraints of her filming schedule, so she mastered the moves in only two days. "I'm not a dancer. I don't do any of that. I have no experience in that field," she shared. "I didn't sleep for two days… I found archival footage of goth kids dancing in clubs in the '80s… And then, on the [shoot] day, I thought, 'All right, let's see what happens.'" Clearly, Jenna's cram session worked — and we'll probably be seeing more of Wednesday's moves on SNL this weekend.
