Jenna Ortega mastered the 2023 Met Gala theme while channeling her most recognizable role.
The star of Netflix's Wednesday arrived at this year's event in a look best described as "goth-glam opulence." Designed by Thom Browne, Ortega's dress featured a black corset top with an enormous ruffled skirt featuring distressed edges extending into a long train. Layers added texture while nodding to the evening's dress code, "in honor of Karl" — a sheer, bow-tied blouse underneath a corset and a tweed bolero jacket to top it all off.
Ortega's look expertly blended Karl Lagerfeld's design signatures at Chanel — like pearls, gold chains, and black ribbon bows embellishing the jacket and the tiered skirt — with Thom Browne's whimsical approach to proportions and texture. Punk accessories tied the whole look together, including sheer knee-high socks and platform brogues. Ortega also wore delicate diamond drop earrings and a diamond ring by Marli New York.
On the glam front, the Scream IV actor looked like a '90s Chanel runway model with thick eyeliner and a half-up, half-down hairstyle.
Jenna Ortega's style has recently included an affinity for all-black outfits that Wednesday Addams would approve of, from a black slip at a Dior party in Los Angeles to a strapless black gown with a thigh-high slit at the 2023 SAG awards. They're a dramatic swerve from her 2022 Met Gala ensemble: For last year's "Gilded Glamour" dress code, she arrived in a hot pink confection by Valentino.
While moody red carpet looks are new for Ortega, she's clearly leaning all the way in to the Wednesday aesthetic. “I’ve always respected goth culture,” Ortega said in a previous interview. “I’ve always had a darker sense of humor, but I never felt like I was able to express that. Now I feel like I can embrace those qualities in myself.”
