Confusing New Jeans Feature a Rear Zipper That Expose Your Entire Butt

Once upon the early aughts (and OK, the ’80s), we thought ripped-butt jeans were the most risqué denim trend out there, but we stand extremely corrected. Levi’s has teamed up with Parisian design collective Vetements to debut a pair of jeans that could practically get you arrested for indecent exposure. The Vetements x Levi’s line includes a series of denim designs with strategically placed zippers — and at least one pair of jeans has a zipper running vertically down the backside.

At first glance, the cheeky pants almost look like they’re on backward. But upon closer inspection, you’ll see rear pockets that reveal they do indeed have a butt-revealing zipper. The pants also feature zippers running down the length of both legs. Fans reacted to an image of the jeans on Instagram with equal parts amusement, bewilderment, and fascination — and more than 47,000 likes.

“Fashion has gone too far,” one person wrote, while others joked that the jeans would be very convenient if someone needed to make an emergency trip to the bathroom. “Built-in air freshener … genius,” one person quipped, while another wrote, “the best jeans ever imo,” with a laughing-till-you-cry emoji face. Of course, there were also people who commented that the jeans provide — ahem — easy access, if you will.

Vetements followed up a few hours later with another version of the design — an image of micro-mini jorts with a zipper down the backside. The model is shown wearing one of the design collective’s signature graphic shirts, which come emblazoned with lengthy dictionary definitions about the particular article of clothing. In this case, the T-shirt features a definition of the word T-shirt.

According to Racked, Vetements is the Anonymous of fashion. Apart from the brand’s creative director and head designer, former Balenciaga lead Demna Gvasalia, the identities of its members remain ambiguous. The avant-garde collective came on the radar when it unveiled its inaugural collection in fall 2014. The brand is beloved by street-style stars and stocked by retailers like Net-a-Porter and Nordstrom.

In July 2016, Levi’s announced its collaboration with the Paris fashion company, along with two other elusive brands with cultlike status: Russian designer Gosha Rubchinskiy and Milan-based label Off-White. “The relationship is a fitting one since Vetements broke into the fashion zeitgeist with its take on jeans,” Levi’s wrote, referring to the brand’s $1,450 reworked vintage jeans, which almost sold out within days of appearing on Net-a-Porter. “The result of this latest approach resulted in an edgy take on Levi’s® jeans.” We’ll say!

Derriere-exposing jeans are a favorite among trendsetting celebrities like Kylie Jenner, who showed off her backside in a pair of ripped-butt jeans by Re/Done on Instagram in August. The brand is also notorious for its underbutt-flashing jorts.

Not ready to flash skin? You can always skip butt-revealing jeans and go for a less racy take on backside-enhancing denim. Give Kylie’s wedgie jeans a spin, or cut the legs out of your pants to re-create sister Kendall’s invisible jeans, which shift the focus to your stems. Or just skip the of-the-moment trends and stick to a tried-and-true pair of blue jeans without the bells and whistles. They never go out of style — but then again, neither will backsides.
