The Muscles from Brussels, a.k.a. Belgian actor and martial arts icon Jean-Claude Van Damme, doesn't want you to miss out on training just because of the Coronavirus pandemic. It's part of the reason why he debuted his series "Train with Van Damme" on his YouTube channel in April 2020. The series has 5 different short episodes (they're all about 10 minutes or less) that are inspired by Van Damme's own experience rehabbing his body.
"Years ago, I was injured, so I rehabilitated myself to have flexibility, dexterity and to go back into shape," he writes, introducing the first video. "I would like to share that with you. It's a program made of no weights with everything that you can use from home."
In the first training video, Van Damme focuses on improving posture and stance by showing you two movements that will have you standing taller and stronger. "What I have to do first is tilt my hips forward," he says, demonstrating the move. "If I walk like this, look at my presence. It's strong. People look at you because you have a physical presence."
Van Damme says he also wants you to focus on that inner strength when training. "We're going to learn to train on the inside," he says. Here's a breakdown of the first two movements.
Using a wall, position yourself with your arms outstretched and hands on the wall, bending forward as you keep your back and legs straight.
"I'm going to do some steps back. Since I'm flexible, I can go a little lower, that's a medium flexibility," he says. Lower your head between your arms, and squeeze your butt lightly. Count for 8 seconds.
Back always straight, feet straight, hands on the sides of your legs. Use traction. "We're going up, inhaling," Van Damme says, raising both hands over his head. He then clasps his hands together as he leans from side to side. "Exhale slowly and go from left to right to have a good stretch."
"A more advanced move is to bring your feet closer together, which "is more difficult with the balance and works different muscles," he adds.
