Jay-Z Talks His and Beyoncé's Parenting Approach in a Rare Interview

In a rare interview with The Sunday Times, Jay-Z opened up about how he and Beyoncé raise their kids together. The couple share three children: nine-year-old Blue Ivy and three-year-old twins Sir and Rumi Carter.

"Feeling loved is the most important thing a child needs, you know?" the rapper said, per Entertainment Tonight. "Not 'Here's this business that I'm going to hand over to you, that I'm creating for you.'"

Jay-Z added that he doesn't want his kids to feel pressured into following their parents' careers in the music or entertainment industries. "What if my child doesn't want to be in music or sports?" he said. "I have no idea, right? But as long as your child feels supported, and feels loved, I think anything is possible."

He continued, "[The goal is to] just make sure we provide a loving environment, be very attentive to who they want to be. It's easy for us, as human beings, to want our children to do certain things, but we have no idea. We're just guides."

At just nine years of age, Blue Ivy is already making waves in music. In March, she became the second-youngest Grammy winner in history, per The Associated Press, when she won the Best Music Video award for "Brown Skin Girl," an accolade that she shares with her mother. The song originally premiered as part of Beyoncé's visual album, Black Is King, which debuted on Disney+ last summer.

"It was so important to me in 'Brown Skin Girl' that we represented all different shades of Brown, and I wanted every character to be shot in a regal light," Beyoncé previously told Good Morning America of the inspiration behind the video.
