Meet Tokyo's scare squad

This performance group is producing

drive-in horror shows

for those who crave close-up frights

//from ghouls, zombies and monsters//

Audience members drive into a garage

and listen to a murder story

while actors creep around them

spraying fake blood over the windows

The group used to produce

shows for amusement parks

but when lockdowns scared audiences away

they turned to immersive horror

(SOUNDBITE) (Japanese) HAUNTED HOUSE PRODUCER AT KOWAGARASETAI, KENTA IWANA, SAYING:

"If we use drive-in, we can avoid close contact because you are inside a car. So I came up with the idea. And I'm sure this would be the first combination of 'drive-in and haunted house' in Japan and I thought we could get exposure if we did it. This is how I started."
