  • The iconic singer and performer said she hopes to age gracefully and admitted that she yearns to stay young although aging is inevitable.

  • “I don’t know when my day is coming, but at some point, it’s going to come,” she said.

Janet Jackson is getting real about aging. In a rare interview with Allure, the 55-year-old star opened up about how she's embracing the aging process, and according to Jackson, she wants to age as effortlessly as possible.

“Everyone would always want to stay young and this and that but it’s inevitable. I mean, we're all going to get there," Jackson told the outlet about aging. “There's another road. It’s a little bit of zhuzh. I don’t know when my day is coming, but at some point, it’s going to come and I can choose which path I want to take.”

Jackson said it’s been a journey with learning to love her body while being in the spotlight. She said was a “tomboy” and used to cover up. “It was always about pants, suits, even as an early teenager,” Jackson said of her style before releasing her album Janet in 1993.

She then decided she wanted to feel in control of her sexuality, and threw herself “in the lion’s den” with a partially nude cover photo in Rolling Stone, where she posed topless with her hands covering her breasts.

“Embracing me and trying to learn to love me for me, my body, all of that. Trying to feel comfortable in embracing that,” Jackson explained of the empowering shoot. “Just going for it, wanting to do something different.”

Jackson said it was “very difficult” to put herself out there. “It took a lot of work, a lot of work ... But I’m glad I walked through it,” she said. “I’m really glad I got in. It was a way of accepting and loving, accepting yourself and your body.”

To look and feel her best, Jackson previously opened up to InStyle about the products she uses in her regular beauty routine, including Burt's Bees Lib Balm, Moroccanoil's Moisture Repair Conditioner, and Maybelline's Total Temptation Eyebrow Definer Pencil.

Ultimately, the star says that she is loving the vibe of less pressure on sexuality and women embracing their bodies as they are. She sang her praises for celebrities like Lizzo, Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, and Miley Cyrus who are trailblazing this movement towards body positivity.

“Comfortable in their skin, in their size, in being full-figured and I love that, as opposed to back in the day,” Jackson told Allure. “You had to always be thin and always look a certain way. And now it's all accepted and it is all beautiful and I absolutely love that.”

And although she wishes to age gracefully, Jackson's goals over time have more to do with connecting with family and making a positive impact on the world. “I’d love to be a grandma. I'd love to, hopefully, still inspire people with my work, whatever it is,” she told InStyle. “And more than anything, I know I’m going to be helping people and inspire others to do the same. I feel that is what I was put on this earth to do.”
