Janelle Monáe Wore Gold Thread In Her Hair

Janelle Monáe is known for her boundary-pushing beauty looks, but on Wednesday, the singer and actress took her edgy look to a new level. At the premiere of her latest film, Hidden Figures, Monáe wore a classic look with a futuristic update.

Taking a cue from her character in the film, Monáe could have stepped out of the 1960s with her pillbox hat and houndstooth swing jacket. Her makeup followed suit, with a swipe of timeless winged liner and a red lip to match her hat.

But Monáe’s ultramodern hair look gave the time-warp style a fresh update. “Gold all in her braids,” wrote Nikki Nelms, the hairstylist behind the look, on Instagram. Nelms and Monáe describe the style as “gold roped afro futuristic pigtails,” and we’re looking forward to seeing it on Nelms’s other celebrity clients, including Solange, Zoë Kravitz, Serena Williams, and Kelly Rowland.
