Jamie Lee Curtis talks transphobia and 'people that want to annihilate' her daughter

Jamie Lee Curtis is opening up about the transphobia her daughter faces.

In an interview with Spain's Cadena SER radio network on Tuesday, the 63-year-old opened up about the violence she often witnesses and her desire to see change in society.

"I have a trans daughter. There are threats against her life just [for] her existence as a human being," the "Halloween" franchise star told Cadena SER. "There are people that want to annihilate her and people like her. The level of hatred... [It's] as if we haven't learned from fascism, [as if] we haven't learned what the result of that is: The extermination of human beings. That is terrifying.

"So Jamie Lee Curtis is scared, and you should be too. And Jamie Lee Curtis has a voice, and she's trying to use it. And you should too. And that's how we change things. We think about them, we learn about them and then we use our voices to bring attention to them and fight against them."

Curtis married actor, director and musician Christopher Guest in December 1984, and the couple eventually adopted two children. They first adopted Annie in 1986, who's now 35. Then, they adopted Ruby in 1996, who's now 26. In 2020, Ruby sat down with her parents to share that she was trans.

"It was scary — just the sheer fact of telling them something about me they didn't know," Ruby told People in 2021. "It was intimidating — but I wasn't worried. They had been so accepting of me my entire life."

In her Cadena SER interview, Curtis further explained that it's a change she's not quite familiar with — but one she's taking seriously.

"It's learning new terminology and words," she said. "I am new at it. I am not someone who is pretending to know much about it. And I'm going to blow it, I'm going to make mistakes. I would like to try to avoid making big mistakes.

"If one person reads this, sees a picture of Ruby and me and says, 'I feel free to say this is who I am,' then it's worth it."

On Tuesday evening, Curtis walked the red carpet at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles while holding hands with both of her daughters for the world premiere of "Halloween Ends." Curtis stunned in a glitzy off-the-shoulder long-sleeve red gown, Annie wore a strapless black dress adorned with two silver roses and Ruby rocked a shiny silver dress under a black jacket while carrying a pumpkin-shaped bag.

"My family. Proudest mother. Loving support," Curtis captioned a photo she posted to Instagram.

Fans were quick to show their love for the trio, with many applauding Curtis for supporting her trans daughter.

"Three lovely ladies! Great pumpkin bag!" one person wrote.

"Wonderful family," commented another.

"You give me so much hope. My mum has been every bit as supportive too and it meant the world," a fan shared.

"Jamie!!! As a trans woman, this makes me so happy!" added another.

"You are such an inspiration for me. My son for 27 years is now my daughter for 2 years," someone explained. "I loved the boy as much as I do love the girl. She is a game developer, so also in the same industry as your daughter. I also have another born daughter. It’s nice to see you are having as beautiful girls as I do."
