There’s nothing quite like the horror of accidentally opening your phone’s front-facing camera and hastily closing it because—gasp, “Do I really look like that?” Listen, no one’s best angle is captured from below their chin, those are just facts. However, Jamie Lee Curtis has some enlightening thoughts about why we should think twice before averting our eyes so quickly. In fact, when the mistake happened to her recently, the actress let her gaze linger and found appreciation for what she saw. So she snapped a photo.

Sharing the shot on Instagram, Curtis called it a “‘gotcha’ moment.” “Often the most unflattering image, we are often looking down, to remind us of our humility, humanity, and lack of hubris in this filtered world we all exist in on this platform,” she wrote.

In her selfie, Curtis just so happened to be in character as Halloween’s titular Laurie Strode, whom she has portrayed over the last 40 years. Curtis’ usual salt-and-pepper pixie was replaced with a blond bob, and neutral glasses framed her makeup-less eyes. Instead of being disturbed by what she saw, the Freaky Friday star said she was “delighted” to see “my heroine, my true north and the survivor of my story Laurie Strode” staring back.

Curtis added that she missed producer Debra Hill, who helped create the character and died of cancer in 2005. “I honor her this day and all who are surviving threat,” she concluded. “Both internal and certainly external in this crazy world.”

Curtis’ followers appreciated the vulnerable moment, and some recounted their own “gotcha” moments. “Every single day I look at myself and think what happened,” one person wrote. “And then I remember what I have accomplished [sic] that gave me these lines and grey hair. Thankful.”

“In my mind, ‘unflattering’ or ‘old’ translates as ‘fortunate’ or ‘earned’. Everyone should own it someday—just like you have, ya rock star!😍🔥👏👏,” another added.

“I love you for your true self ! We are the same age and it’s refreshing to have you be my role model embracing life not looks,” someone else commented.

In an industry that tends to overlook older women, the 63-year-old boldly embraces her age, and doesn’t let it stop her from pressing on. “I have a motto now, as I am past that sell-by date, which is, ‘If not now, when? If not me, who?’ I say it to myself every single day,” she recently told InStyle. “And after more than 40 years in the business, I am busier today than I have ever been in my entire life.”
